Early days of the double property nos:1 & 3

Until the last 50yrs or so; the double property (nos: 1 & 3) has mainly been owned by remote landlords with tenant occupants. In the early days these frequently being members of the church - was The Hollies housename (many Upton Park housenames are trees) based on "The Holies" ?.

Indentures dated 20 September 1876 show the double property conveyed to John Davies and then briefly in 1881 to John Davies; William Hughes and John Griffiths; before passing only 3 months later on 31 March 1881 to Elizabeth Cox; Harriett Cox and Charlotte Hollis Cox.

Although the double property appears to be vacant for the 1881 census; the 1891 census records a Thomas Cox - a retired clerk of holy orders. Thomas Cox is on the 1901 electoral roll. The 1891 census record is the first noting of the house name The Hollies

An indenture dated 5 May 1903 shows the Reverend James Richardson of East London - a South Africa Missionary of the London Missionary Society mortgaging for £600 the double property to widow Mrs Eliza Davies of Burland nr Nantwich and farmer Robert Davies of Faddiley nr Nantwich. At this time the tenants were Robert Johnson and John Griffiths.

Mrs Eliza Davies died 9 August 1908 and on 27 October 1909 the mortgage transfered into the names of farmer Robert Davies still of Nantwich and John Davies of 41 Liverpool Rd Chester.

A graveyard headstone in Upton Parish churchyard bears the name..
John Griffiths of the Hollies who died 18 April 1913 aged 69 (a widower his wife Jane bn 14 Nov 1842 having died 6 Jan 1905)

Indenture dated 4 July 1918 then conveyed the double property at £840 from farmer Robert Davies still of Cooks Pit Faddiley nr Nantwich; to Samuel Ollerhead another farmer from Malpus. At this point the £600 mortgage with Rev James Richardson was paid off. By this time the Rev James Richardson is recorded as being of 26 Park Road Lytham Lancs - a minister of Religion. The indentures records previous occupants as the Rev James Richardson and also the Rev Miles Towers of Upton parish church. Later G Caine? and the Rev W Fairy? Williams.

Samuel Ollerhead died in May 1933. The Park accounts then show the Park rate being settled for a few years by Mrs F Ollerhead for both The Hollies and The Anchorage. The Park rate was then paid by Mrs Griffiths for The Hollies ( a Mrs Griffiths owned Spring Villa - no:29) and Mr W Jones for no:3 - now known as Derrymore. On Mrs Ollerhead death it appears that the double property was inherited by her son John Blake Ollerhead who sold the two halves of the property independently apparently prior to emigrating to New Zealand.
