William David Capstick of Redlands
1st July 1904 to 9th November 1983. Bill trained as a house builder and started the building and contracting company Capstick and Owen Ltd. in about 1928 in Liverpool with his two elder brothers Thomas and Joseph and with William Owen. In the 1930s the company bought land in Upton-by-Chester and started to build in 1936, starting with the four shops at the Bache. By the outbreak of war in 1939 most of Upton Drive and two houses in the Croft had been built. An area of land was reserved at the north end of Upton Drive for a railway station for the Great Western Railway Company. In 1938 he married Kathleen Joan Lanham of Redland, Bristol and they had two sons, David was born in 1940 and Richard in 1945. During the war the company was employed on bomb damage repair or demolition in Liverpool. He built Redlands in Upton Park and the family moved in on the 5th November 1953. The house is very similar to the family house which he had built in 1938 in Liverpool and has not been changed significantly since then. By 1953 the company was able to start to build again in Chester and Upton Drive and Pine Gardens were completed, then the Croft and Orchard Close together with two houses in Bache Drive. The land at the end of Upton Drive was no longer needed for a station so it was given to the 1st Upton Scout Group to build their new Scout Hut in 1957, however about half the land was acquired a few years later for the widening of Liverpool Road. The company had acquired a large piece of land in Hoole containing a derelict house which was demolished and about 50 houses were built on Hoole Road and Woodfield Grove by 1961. The company continued to build houses at Whitby, Lymm, Duddon and Great Sutton until the late sixties when the company closed down and the two remaining partners retired. The company also owned the land of numbers 50 and 52 but sold it to Peter Dentith who built these two houses in 1965. Bill was a keen golfer and a member of Upton Golf Club, he was Stage Manager of Upton Dramatic Society for many years and acted a not very convincing detective and furniture removal man with Bill Wilson. Very soon after moving to Upton Park, Bill was on the UPPA committee - his knowledge of the building trade being very useful. He continued to serve on the committee through the 1960s. Bill and Joan left Redlands in October 1973 when the house was taken over by David and Barbara Capstick with their two children, Joanna and Anthony. |
