John Gilmour recalls the occasion in the early 1950s when their dog Raq was suddenly startled with hairs bristling on his back. Passing down the road past their house was a Mahout leading his elephant. Apparently the elephant had come up by train and was on route to the zoo. The route through Upton Park was obviously seen as the best way.
