Arthur Walter Snead Furley & son
R Furley
of several properties c1920-c1954
Mr A W S Furley ran a substantial local business; owned three Park
properties and was an active Park committee member, as was his son R Furley.
AWS was an Electrical Engineer with his own business based
at Long Lane Upton (the shop later became McFarlanes).
AWS Furley and wife Daisy Rebecca are recorded in electoral rolls -
- 1921 - Laburnum Bank (no:13)
- 1929 - Firdene (no:66)
- 1939 - Wyeby (no:64)
According to the Park accounts he acquired Oakley & Firdene (nos: 66 & 68)
in 1925 from Brook Hirst & Co. At that time still with extensive
grounds - some 6472 sq yards - but some 2000 sq yds less than when
held by Brook Hirst & Co: This property and ground had once belonged
to William Shone - the son
of one of the Park's founding fathers.
AWS Furley is shown in the Park Accounts as paying the rate for both
Oaklea & Firdene from 1925 until 1946. Also for Wyeby (no: unknown)
(possibly built in his ground?) from 1935 until 1946.
The Furley of Oaklea until 1954 is
R Furley (his son ?). Mr R Furley played an active committee role
regarding the road maintenance.
Although owning two (for a while three) substantial properties in
Upton Park nevertheless in the pre-WW2 period he apparently lived
above the shop in Long Lane. He was considered a astute businessman
and although having built up a substantial business in the area;
engineering the utility transfer from gas to electric; he secured a
significant job advising on the electrical infrastructure of
a new post-WW2 town being built in Scotland. It is believed that
Mrs Furley had
health problems and may have initially remained in the Park after
A W moved to Scotland.
One of the provisions of Furley's business was recharging accummulators
for radios and many local people used this service.
