Plots 14 & 15
House numbers 28 built c1893;
Most people recall this double plot as being Garden House (no:28) with its large garden and orchard. In fact although no:28 was built c1893 it appears to have only acquired plot 15 (the orchard) around the 1930s or even later. The 1872 OS survey shows trees but no building on plot 14; while plot 15 is not shown to have trees until the post-1936 OS survey. The 1857 plot allocations plan shows both plots 13 & 14 under the name Woodward. William Pitt originally owned plot 15 in 1857 and conveyed the plot to Margaret Anne Higginson a widow of Chester on 25 Jan 1873. The plot was still undeveloped over the next 60 years and the ownership record is very limited until it was acquired for an orchard by Miss Longworth Dames the owner of no:28. The Minute book for 1911 does record a letter going to a Mr Hughes complaining about the height of the frontage hedge on the bend in the roadway and requiring it to be lowered to five feet. At this time there was a long-term lodger by the name of Hughes residing at The Limes (no:25) - possibly he owned or leased the orchard. On the death of Miss Longworth Dames in 1961; the orchard plot was auctioned separately and in 1967 nos 26 & 24 were built on the 2337 sq yds plot. Planning permission had been granted for 3 properties but the Land Tribunal ruled in favour of the Covenant and onlt two properties were built. Despite further attempts to develop the remaining third plot it remains as a natural wooded sanctuary amongst the tended gardens of the surrounding households. No:30 was the last property built in Upton Park. Built in the grounds of no:28; both properties are home to the Lloyd family and no boundary line is physically in place. |
