Upton Park roadway - the early days

No records have been identified to give any indication of how the roadway was established and the state of it for the first three or four decades. It is likely however that a surface was gradually established with chippings and potholes kept under reasonable control using fire ash from proprietors properties.

The Minute book from 1899 and Accounts book from 1921 record periods with the services of a Roadman and the delivery of various materials and tools needed by him to maintain the road and boundaries. Until 1928; the earliest accounts ledger balance sheet showing road maintence costs; it is not clear from the minutes as to whether agreed proposals were actually carried out. For example significant work was proposed in 1904 -
- 20 tons of 1inch Macadam and 10 tons of halfinch chippings along with the services of a steam roller.
- Curbing using Lancashire curbs (4" X 12") at an installed cost of 3/- per linear yard.

For most of the years between 1928 and 1935 the balance sheet records roadman George Woodward's wages, tar chippings mainly from the Ceiriog Granite Co: and tar spraying.
