The Smith / Pearson family 1873 - 1953William Smith was one of many early Park residents working on the railways. When he bought Westview (no:80) in 1873 he was a railway plate layer and by the 1891 census he was recorded as a retired railway contractor. By this time his first wife Margaret had died and he had remarried to Jane. His son William is not recorded as having lived at Westview for the 1881 census and may already have left home. Daughter Cecilia (bn 17 Jun 1872) however was only a baby when the family bought the property in 1873. It is possible that they had an elder daughter because their grandson William H Whitby is buried in Upton (stone stating died 13 July 1892 aged 23yrs) and the 1901 census records a 23yr old spinster Margaret Whitby within the household. Father William Smith was born in Roade Northamptonshire and when he had the property built next door on plot 17 he named one half Roade Villa. He died on 29 Sept 1895 aged 74yrs leaving Westview to his two children but ensuring that his new wife Jane had the rights to live out her life there. William Pearson, a Chester Chemist, is first recorded in the 1901 electoral roll as a lodger to Mrs Smith. A similar record in 1911 shows him still as a lodger to Mrs Smith but having more facilities provided. By 1904 daughter Cecilia had married William Pearson and had started formal arrangements with brother William; then living in Leicester; to gradually buy out his interests in Westview. It appears that by the death of Jane Smith on 14 Nov 1919 then aged 81yrs, Cecilia Pearson was the full owner of the property. William Pearson was chairman of UPPA from 1922 - 1925 and is named as settling the Park rates until his death 27 March 1930 (aged 70) and Cecilia until her death 1 January 1936. They are still shown as owning Roade Villa (no 74) during the 1920s and 1930s renting it out. The Pearson are known to have had three children although William born 26 Aug 1907 only survived 6days. Marshall Smith Pearson and Constance Hilda Pearson were both reputedly very tall. Marshall thought to be 6' 6" was well known in the Park as 'Tiny Pearson'. By 1939 Marshall is not named as living in the Park and Constance was in Westview as one of four women. In 1940 Constance sold Westview and left the Park while Marshall inherited Roade Villa (no:74) and had moved in post-WW2 with his wife Leonora. Marshall was active in Park affairs and did not leave the Park until 1953. Reputedly he was a driving instructor but when he left in 1953 he went to Anglesea to run a pub. |
