Wells in Upton Park

Eight well sites have been identified - as shown on the map below as X's overlayed on the 1898 OS map. It is thought possible that they are all on the course of an underground stream. The fall of the land is north to south suggesting the stream may also be north to south. Significant improvements in land drainage in the Upton area over the last 50 years or so make account for the loss of the natural pond in the garden of no:58. Although not shown on OS surveys since 1872 it is remembered as recently as the 1940s. It may well have been that the underwater stream surfaced at that point.

Most of these have been filled in and covered over often with patio but one that is 6 foot in diameter has been recently restored to a depth of 12 foot and with a working traditional handpump. The only other one still visible is on a garden boundary - one half covered over but the other half still allowing limited access.
