C W (Bill) Wilson of Hawthorns

Bill in 1977

Born in 1914 and educated at the Kings school in Chester; Bill was a Provost Sergeant in the TA and commissioned for WW2 reaching the rank of Captain when he was demobbed at the end of the war. He became a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and worked as a valuation office for the Government. In later years he was a consultant with Beresford Adams in Chester.

Bill and Joan came to the Park in 1951/2 initially to live at Hawthorn Villa (no:21). By 1954 Bill had joined the committee and along with others; joining post-WW2; provided the younger views in a committee that had been dominated for a good while by an older guard. Over many years; Bill was an active committee member raising many issues specifically regarding the tidy and well behaved manner of the Park. Passionate about the Covenant; he put considerable energy into fighting any proposed breach and in leading campaigns where cases were refered to the Land Tribunal. He became Chairman in 1962 staying until 1967 when he stepped down on the grounds that the chair should be with someone more available. When time allowed; Bill returned as chairman serving for several more years before retiring to remain an active member of the Association keeping members on their toes and expecting them to retain the whole Park to a high standard.

A keen rower from his youth; Bill became Captain of Grosvenor Rowing Club and as an active member of the Upton Dramatic Society helped Bill Capstick in building scenery while never really seeing himself as an actor.
